Simulating Crises for Optimal Response in Emergencies (SCORE) is a multidisciplinary medical education course, especially designed to meet the unique challenges of rural and community health care providers.  Health care practitioners in Emergency Medicine, Hospitalist Medicine, Anesthesia, Intensive care and other acute care disciplines must all possess the skills necessary to manage unpredictable, high acuity and high stakes clinical situations. SCORE emphasizes the role of non-technical and human factors in effective team performance for these challenging situations.  Using a combination of high fidelity simulation, in-depth post simulation debriefing and crisis resource management coaching sessions, SCORE provides participants with a chance to develop and practice the types of leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving skills necessary for effective crisis response. While most of the content is applicable to all practice environments, a particular emphasis on rural and community hospital resource limitations is embedded in the course content.

The SCORE Course

The one day SCORE course combines simulated cases, hands on workshops and Crisis Resource Management coaching sessions to develop and practice the technical and non-technical skills required of rural and community health care teams. With an emphasis on communication, decision making and effective team performance, physicians will get the opportunity to play both “team lead” and “helper” roles while allied health professionals will get to use their skills as part of an interdisciplinary team. Groups sizes are very limited, ensuring individualized coaching and feedback. Physician participant to staff ratios are between 1:1 and 1:2. SCORE has over 50 hours of accredited content and the modules selected for each course are based on the needs assessments of the participants.

This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for at least 24 Mainpro+ Credits.

This activity is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Office at NOSM University on 19/03/2024 and expires 03/2027. The SCORE Airway Course

New in 2023, the SCORE airway course has received a perfect 5/5 rating by all of the participants to date. SCORE Airway is a full day course designed to improve both technical and cognitive proficiency in airway management. The course is extremely hands on with 2:1 learner to faculty ratios and “bedside” teaching using a variety of simulation techniques. Coaching and deliberate practice are used for airway skills refinement. Case based high fidelity simulation is used for improving team approaches to anatomically and physiologically complex airways.

Curriculum highlights includes:

-techniques for videolaryngoscopy mastery

-difficult airway algorithm deliberate practice

-post intubation crisis management

-tissue based front of the neck airway practice

-pharmacologic approaches to airway optimization

-awake intubation techniques
